Losing a pet is a frightening experience, but help is here! There are many steps you can take to find your pet. Browse the topics to the right for information.

Chesapeake Animal Services houses stray animals found in Chesapeake. Owners of pets that bear identification or a microchip will be contacted immediately upon pickup. All uninjured strays will be held for 5 days if there is no identification or 10 days (as required by law) if there is a microchip or a collar. After that time, the animal will be put up for adoption or will be humanely euthanized. Severely injured animals will be taken immediately to a veterinarian and if the veterinarian deems the animal's injuries to be life threatening or to be causing severe suffering, the animal will be humanely euthanized.

Since verbal descriptions of the same pet can vary, Cheseapeake Animal Services requires that you come directly to the shelter to find your lost pet. To retrieve your pet, you must provide:
1. A city license
2. A rabies number
3. Pictured ID
4. Impoundment fee of $15-25 per day

In extenuating circumstances, Chesapeake Animal Services may accept vet records instead of a city license or a rabies number. Special circumstances will be handled on a case by case basis.

Below are the times that Chesapeake Animal Services is open to receive strays and pick up lost pets:

• Monday, Tuesday,Thursday,   Friday, & Saturday: 1-4pm
• Closed Wednesday, Sunday
